Improving Community Development Through Proactive Roof Damage Detection and Property Rehabilitation

Data Science Mentor(s): Kasun Amarasinghe
Project Partner: Baltimore Department of Housing and Community Development, Mayor's Office of Performance and Innovation | Baltimore City
Baltimore City has experienced a rapid increase in vacant properties, many of which receive little to no maintenance, resulting in progressive structural deterioration. Without intervention, these properties pose a significant public safety risk, as structural failure and potential collapse could adversely impact the surrounding community, the well-being of residents, and the integrity of adjacent structures.
The goal of this project is to help them minimize building deterioration, minimize adverse impacts on adjacent properties of buildings with structural deterioration, and improve the chances of property rehabilitation through the use of aerial imagery and additional historical data from the city.
